EU calls for global climate front. Eija-Riitta Korhola MEP
"The European Union has taken the leading role in the fight to slow down climate change. Now it is time for the EU to convince its global partners of concrete cooperation", said the EPP-ED Spokesperson, Eija-Riitta Korhola MEP today, as the European Parliament adopted the Resolution preparing the Bali Climate Conference, to be held from 3 to 14 December 2007 in Indonesia.
"The EPP-ED Group is willing to look for solutions that are more global than has been the case so far. We are open to new solutions, since one-sided ambitiousness in reducing emissions will not lead to a sustainable solution for our planet. At the same time, when we have agreed to be the front runners, we must underline that this is not enough for the EU. Our focus has always to be on gathering a wide front for reducing emissions, finding technological solutions and reaching for global market mechanisms that genuinely encourage emission reductions", Korhola stated.
"I am delighted that the European Parliament has given a clear message to the Climate Conference and recognised the seriousness of the threat climate change poses. Moreover, the Parliament has acknowledged the positive role nuclear energy plays in fighting climate change. The atmosphere does not have moral sensors; it does not reject one source of energy or prefer another due to ideological reasons. Only emissions count, and we cannot afford to increase them. Therefore, the role of nuclear energy is crucial", said Korhola.
The EPP-ED Group has been at the vanguard of fighting climate change in the European Union by proposing the European Parliament to set up a Temporary Committee on Climate Change. Korhola is a Member of this Committee and she is also the EPP Party Rapporteur on Climate Change.
